Pets & Ai - Have we gone too far, or are we just Keeping Up with the Times?
Ai is pretty much everywhere now hey? It’s helping us write emails, auto-generating images, (like this one lol) managing our budget and now it’s officially moved into our living rooms to track our pets, from smart collars and harness trackers to Ai cameras and even smart litter boxes and feeders!
Some platforms are stepping up with pretty bold promises claiming to be able to take the guesswork completely out of pet care. The whole idea is to take your pet's medical history, lab results and your own daily notes and turn them into one continuous health timeline. The big problem they claim to solve is “Catching those subtle, early signs of illness or stress that are super easy to miss, so we aren't just relying on quick vet checkups or pure guesswork”
As pet lovers, we want our beloved fur kids to be well and stay well but it makes me wonder: Is this an amazing step forward, or are we taking things a little too far for a few reasons…
Let's be honest about the Tech in Our Homes
I’d totally use it, I love tech, but looking at it realistically, you have to ask how it actually fits into daily lives. If you look at it from a psychological angle, an app constantly pinging you about every tiny shift in your pet's routine could easily turn a nervous pet parent into a full blown neurotic pet parent! Plus, for already slammed families, is a pet tracking app actually going to help, or is it just one more chore on a massive to-do list?
How I think it could be a Game Changer
That said, where this tech really shines is fixing a problem every animal lover knows all too well: animals are absolute pros at hiding when they’re not feeling well and because they are so adaptive you can miss when something is wrong until it’s an emergency with a pricey vet bill attached.
I think this is where AI could be a total game changer especially for owners that have their fur kids from a puppy they canpotentially save money down the road. It’s definitely a slow-burn process, but by catching tiny health shifts over months instead of waiting for obvious symptoms, I honestly think it could save you thousands in surprise emergency vet bills over time.
Another factor for busy families where their pet is an "only child" or if you just don't hang out with other pets often it's hard to figure out what's normal on your own & establish a base line. Which is where I think this technology could come into great effect!
One real nugget of gold I see here too is in behavior tracking, especially around anxiety and aggression. That could be huge for rescue animals who come with mystery backstories with hidden triggers!
The Bottom Line
At the end of the day, tech in pet care isn't going to replace a loving owner or the hands-on care of a vet or the assessment of a skilled an animal behavioruist and well the fact is too the technology is only as smart as the programmer building it after all. (I think - at this stage anyways)
So I think if we use it as a helpful sidekick rather than getting totally obsessed with every data point, leaning into our Ai times might just give us the best view into our pets' health than we’ve ever had.
